NPD: Console and PC gaming on the up, handhelds down.

In their yearly online study of gamers habits, the NPD Group has revealed that this year shows a 9% increase in console gaming, whereas gaming saw a 6% increase. Portable gaming didn’t see such good figures though, showing a sharp decline of 16%.

That’s not all though, the study also offers an insight into the ages of players. PC gamers rank as the oldest, with an average player 42 years young. Overall though, the average age of a gamer was 32, up 1 from last year’s results. 4% represented an “extreme gamers” who spent over 2 days (48.5 hours) a week playing games.

18,872 individuals were part of the study, where gamers aged 13 and up. Anyone under 13 required “surrogate reporting” where a parent of guardian accompanied the participant.
