Despite the fact that Age of Empires founders Ensemble Studios has gone the way of the dodo, Microsoft has announced Age of Empires Online, from developers Robot Entertainment – co-founded by Ensemble Studios co-founder, Tony Goodman.

is described as a “a living, growing online world, shared with friends and friendly rivals around the globe.” They’ll be a solo component, as well, but are clearly focusing on the social aspect. While details are scarce, there will apparently be a “free-to-play” portion in there somewhere.

Currently set for a 2011, digital-download only release, you can check out the games first trailer up above, and register for the beta over on the official site.

Proving that best things do come in two’s, Microsoft also revealed ‘Microsoft Flight,’ which appears to be ‘ Simulator’ only without the simulator.

Flight is apparently “inspired” by it’s older brother, and “will bring a new perspective to the long-standing genre, welcoming everyone, including long-time fans, to experience the magic of flight.” There’s a short CGI teaser trailer available on the games website.
