GSC is closed, STALKER 2 cancelled.

STALKER 2 concept art. Update 2: 1C Ukraine’s Sergey Galenkin has posted a blog about the situation, confirming GSC’s closure.

“GSC is closed, a fact confirmed by all. The team is almost completely dissolved, the state has only a few people.” Galenkin blames the cost of developing a PC only shooter for a European audience, and a failed console publishing deal, for the collapse of the developer.”

Such a shame. Original post follows.

Conflicting reports are coming out of the Ukraine today, with some suggesting that , developer of the STALKER franchise, are shutting down, with their current project on the chopping block.

However, a Tweet from the studio (or at least whoever is in control of their Twitter account) denied the rumour, but the Tweet has since been deleted. Studio director Dmitri Bourkovski then said “Not PR. GSC closed.” Update: Dmitri Bourkovski essentially used this oppurtunity to troll, and has no affiliation with GSC. There is still hope!

The lastest is a statement from GSC to Rock Paper Shotgun that simply states, “sorry, no comments at this time.”

The rumours of GSC’s demise originated from a Ukrainian news report, claiming that CEO Sergei Grigorovich was unhappy with progress on STALKER 2 and decided to close the company. UKRANews then speculates that a “Ukranian law enforcement agency” were interested in taking control of GSC, (translation: “they wanted to capture the company and have their money/control their direction”).

Currently, it’s unclear what exactly is going on at GSC, but I’ll update the story with more information when it emerges.
