id Software’s parent company, Bethesda Softworks, has confirmed reports of layoffs at the studio, though the amount of employee affected is currently unknown.
“As part of its standard business practice, id regularly evaluates staffing to ensure it has a workforce that meets the needs of the studio,” said VP of marketing and PR Pete Hines in an email sent to Joystiq.
Apparently, during that process, “some id employees were let go.” As Hines points out, though, “id is still recruiting and hiring qualified developers, and development work on future id titles continues unabated.”
Currently, id Software are only know to be working on DOOM 4, which is thought to have been in development for as much as four years. While John Carmack talked about potential sequels to RAGE, the games rather muted response may have killed that idea before it even got of the ground.
