Forget Psychonauts 2, Double Fine’s next game is almost certainly going to be a brand new adventure game, but it’ll have a twist: it’s fan funded.
Tim Schafer made the announcement last night, revealing that a Kickstarter aimed at raising the $400,000 needed via fan donations. They’d reached their goal within 8 hours, and with 33 days to go, currently sit at a hefty $837,453. But that’s ok though, because Double Fine promise that anything over the $400,000 mark will get put back into the game, whether it be in additional VO, or porting the game to more platforms.
At this rate, the campaign is on track to reach the $1 million mark within 24 hours.
Of course, they aren’t asking for money for nothing. Donations tiers range from $15 (a copy of the game on Steam and access to the beta) all the way up to $150,000 (Tim Schafer will personally hand you one of the last four “Triangle Boxed Day of the Tentacles, in original shrink-wrap.”)
There’s going to be a documentary on the development, as well, with 2 Player Productions handling filming.
