A report on GameIndustry.biz claims to have unearthed details about Sony’s rumoured attempts to sign a deal with cloud gaming service Gaikai.
According to their sources, Sony plans to use the service to offer a form of backwards compatibility, via the cloud, across Sony platforms. Essentially, you’ll be able to play both first and third party Playstation 1 and Playstation 2 games on current generation hardware (the Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita).
The partnership is likely to be announced during Sony’s E3 conference on Monday, and will be open to third parties looking to sell their games. If other rumours prove true, it’ll only be open to Playstation Plus subscribers.
Of course it’s also possible the deal could spread to Sony’s internet enabled televisions, opening up a whole new market.
Either way, we’ll know more on Monday.
Both Sony and Gaikai declined to comment on the article.
