Valve have released Authoring Tools (more commonly known as the SDK) for Left 4 Dead 2. The tools allow designers the chance to make their own maps for the title.
Players who aren’t looking to jump in on the creative side of things, but would still enjoy the addition content, should head to their ‘Tools’ tab in the Steam interface. There they will find the item ‘Left 4 Dead 2 Add-On Support’ which is a required download for anyone wishing to play custom scenarios. The Add-On Support is a sizeable download, but will enable your L4D2 installation the ability to run any custom map, including those made for Left 4 Dead 1.
Designers will have to download both the Add-On Support program and the ‘Left 4 Dead 2 Authoring Tools’ item. The tools themselves are similar to those released for Left 4 Dead 1, but with a few key enhancements.
For example, designers can now create a single map which behaves differently depending on the game mode selected. This drastically reduces the initial barrier to entry (file size) as the same map can be used for Campaign, Survival, Versus and Scavenge modes. The director can also be specified to change the map layout, altering routes and events, depending on how well the players are doing.
Valve does note, Left 4 Dead 1 map makers may want to compile Left 4 Dead 2 specific versions of their projects, in order to take advantage of the new features.
